Who Needs DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing?

DOT testing is federally mandated for employees who perform safety-sensitive functions in the following industries:

FMCSA - Commercial motor vehicle drivers (CDL holders)

FAA - Aviation workers (pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers)

PHMSA - Pipeline operators

FTA - Transit and rail employees

FRA - Railroad employees

USCG - Maritime employees

No Compromise, Just Compliance

If you operate commercial vehicles, employ CDL drivers, or work in any DOT-regulated industry, DOT testing is not optional—it's required by federal law.

No Compromise, Just Compliance

Supported DOT Test Types

GCP provides all six federally mandated DOT drug and alcohol test types:

1. Pre-Employment Testing

When: Before an employee performs their first safety-sensitive duty

Purpose: Verify the employee is drug-free before beginning work

Requirements: Must receive negative drug test result before performing safety-sensitive duties

2. Random Testing

When: Unannounced, unpredictable selections throughout the year

Purpose: Deter drug and alcohol use among safety-sensitive employees

Requirements: Employers must test 50% of driver pool for drugs annually, 10% for alcohol

GCP Assistance: We help coordinate random selection pools and ensure compliant testing frequencies

3. Post-Accident Testing

When: After qualifying accidents involving commercial vehicles

Purpose: Determine if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors

Requirements: Must be conducted as soon as practicable following the accident

Testing Triggers:

Fatality

Citation issued + injury requiring immediate medical treatment away from scene

Citation issued + vehicle towed from scene

GCP Emergency Response: Fast deployment for urgent post-accident collections

4. Reasonable Suspicion Testing

When: When trained supervisor observes behavior indicating possible drug or alcohol use

Purpose: Identify and remove impaired employees from safety-sensitive duties

Requirements: Supervisor must document specific observations of appearance, behavior, speech, or body odor

GCP Support: We provide reasonable suspicion documentation templates and supervisor training resources

5. Return-to-Duty Testing

When: After an employee violates DOT drug and alcohol regulations, before returning to safety-sensitive work

Purpose: Verify employee is drug/alcohol-free before resuming duties

Requirements: Must complete SAP evaluation and receive SAP recommendation before testing

6. Follow-Up Testing

When: Unannounced testing after return-to-duty, for 1-5 years as determined by SAP

Purpose: Monitor ongoing compliance after a violation

Requirements: Minimum 6 tests in first 12 months; SAP determines total number and frequency

What We Test For

DOT 5-Panel Drug Test

All DOT drug tests screen for the following five substance classes:

Marijuana (THC)

Cocaine

Opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin)

Phencyclidine (PCP)

Amphetamines / Methamphetamines

DOT Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT)

Breath alcohol testing measures blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

DOT regulations prohibit:

Performing safety-sensitive duties with BAC of 0.04% or greater

Consuming alcohol within 4 hours of performing safety-sensitive duties

Consuming alcohol while on duty

GCP uses USDOT-approved Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) devices and certified Breath Alcohol Technicians (BAT) for all alcohol testing.
